Design Practice 3 Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

This module has given me a chance to choose the skills I want to develop and make lot more of my own decisions. I think that this has been hugely beneficial to my practice and allowed me to create and start to develop my own identity and style as a designer. For instance, before the module in my statement of intent I had stated an interest to experiment with printing, stock and pattern and shape. The NASA brief allowed me to experiment with colored stock and experiment with the order or different stocks within a booklet. The illustration inside also became a experiment into using line and pattern over the top of photographic images which is another area I was interested. The Don't Panic Resistance brief allowed me to really experiment with line and pattern in an info-graphical context which I really enjoyed .

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

In previous years and modules I feel like sometimes I have fallen into a work practice of constant planning and idea development without any "making". This year I have changed my practice into one which I think is a lot more effective and beneficial to the resolutions to my work. Instead of making hundreds of design sheets or development and how my resolutions could look, I have been a lot less hesitant and make decisions straight away. I will have an idea of paper, and if I like it instead of developing it a hundred times over and never knowing how it with actually look and feel, I will actually make it, or mock it up to the best of my ability. When I have my work to that stage, that's when I can stand back and make more decisions about how it can be re-designed or improved. I think that this practice is more beneficial to a designer like me as I so heavily concerned with print, stock and finish so until I have a good mock up made I can't really tell exactly what my idea will look and feel like.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

I think that this year my technical and finishing skills have been a real strength in my work. I feel like I am working to a really high quality of finish and production. I wan to develop these skills even further, I'm always constantly concerned with the improvement of the print and production of my ideas and my practice is becoming more and more process led. I also think that my decision making skills have been a strength this term and making decisions has improved the speed of my practice considerably. I feel like I have worked in quite a streamlined fashion and tried to be quite brutal in the management of my time. The biggest reward from working like this was being almost ready for submission a few days before hand in which allowed me to really organize all my work for a smooth and simple submission. Finally this term I feel like I have (finally) started to become a lot more contextually aware. I have been paying a lot more attention to design magazines and blogs and I feel like I am more up to date on contemporary design that I have ever been and I think this is definitely helpful for the development of my work.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

I think that I could say that my main weakness is also one of my strengths. I like to be very decisive in my work and when I am working on a short timescale this design practice works very well and I think it shows that my best work does come out of short sharp projects. However when I have timetabled to work for a bit longer, maybe a few weeks on a project, I do tend to dive straight in and make a lot of decisions in the first few days. Whilst this does mean that I get a lot of time to remake and refine my ideas and resolutions. Sometimes I do feel like I might have missed even thinking about some of the other initial ideas and concept I could have dealt with and by this point I'm too far down the line to go back and do those things again. I think that I can overcome this problem by spending just one extra day brainstorming initial ideas and concepts before I start to make design decisions.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Spend an extra day developing initial concept ideas when I am spending 2 or more weeks on a project.
2. Be more rigorous with the documentation of my development on my blog.
3. Experiment with some more innovative formats and sizes in my work.
4. Source the websites I am put work from on my design contexts blog with a link so I can get back to to easily.
5. Keep my project file organized from the start of the module.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
